The Makings of a Steam Punk Costume

30 Jul

(Definition taken from Wikipedia)

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fictionalternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s.[1] Steampunk involves a setting where steam power is still widely used—usually the Victorian eraBritain—that incorporates elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistictechnology or futuristic innovations as Victorians may have envisioned them; based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culturearchitectural styleart, etc. This technology may include such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne.

Other examples of steampunk contain alternative history-style presentations of such technology as lighter-than-air airships,analog computers, or such digital mechanical computers as Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace‘s Analytical engine.

Steampunk is sometimes compared to cyberpunk, although apart from the shared origins of the name, they have almost nothing in common. Their time period and level of technology are different and steampunk settings also tend to be less dystopian.

Various modern utilitarian objects have been modded by individual artisans into a pseudo-Victorian mechanical “steampunk” style, and a number of visual and musical artists have been described as steampunk.

Ben Tour

27 May

Ben Tour, an artist I found stumbling around the internet using StumbleUpon, uses black and white drawings and photos and etc with beautiful splotches of color.

“Canadian-born artist Ben Tour (b. 1977) channels a dark, often haunting sense of humanism in his work.
His observations deftly inform his paintings, enabling him to capture the essence of a character, and then distort that view any way he desires. Frenetic lines, swaths of color, and intimate angles all convey a sense that Tour may not only be drawing inspiration from the lives of strangers he observes, but manifesting his own personal experiences as well. Ben Tour lives on the Sunshine Coast, British Columbia with his Wife and two children. Tour has exhibited in galleries from Los Angeles to Miami, Hamburg to New York. His work has been featured in publications including Juxtapoz and Playboy and he is a regular contributor to Color magazine. He has worked with clients such as BMW, Absolut, Nike and Burton Snowboards.”  – Taken from Tour’s website:

Peter Callesen

28 Apr

For a while now I’ve had an internet browser program that lets me stumble through different websites. Its called Stumble Upon ( http://www.stumbleupon.com ) and you can choose categories or just stumble along a vast number of your favorite subjects, and so I chose the art category and have been stumbling through some wonderful art websites. I’ll be sharing my discoveries with you all 🙂

First off is the first website I stumbled upon which inspired me to do some of the same with my own artwork.

Peter Callesen, from Denmark, has been doing wonderful paper cut outs.

Link to his website:

I hope you enjoy his work as much as I have 🙂
